RIP Gil Scott-Heron – Minimix
Today brought the sad passing of poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron, at the age of 62.
Never short of critical acclaim, nevertheless Scott-Heron failed to trouble the charts throughout his long career, though it couldn’t have been more obvious that he wasn’t driven towards this definition of success.
Troubled, and often in the throes of drug addiction, he was a celebrated poet, and an underrated musical talent who performed what he described as “bluesology”. The brilliant I’m New Here from 2010, and its remix followup with Jamie XX, We’re New Here were the artist’s first releases in 16 years, and work astonishingly well as a parting note.
Below is a minimix I (badly) put together in tribute, along with a tracklist.
