Eclectic Mixup 2: Association Music (It’s Getting Cold)

Posted in Eclectic Mixup, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on October 21, 2008 by essentiallyeclectic

The general idea behind my concept of association music is simple: music that, although may already be of great quality, is aurally heightened when experienced in specific environments. For example, some albums/songs are unquestionably more enjoyable when heard first thing in the morning, in the sun, on a quiet street, when stoned, at night etc etc (D’angelo’s ‘Voodoo’ album is a brilliant example of the last two on that list).

This post is concerned with music for the cold months. As I listen to at least 50% of my music in headphones while travelling out and about, it is essential to have some good association music when the wind is sharp and the first frosts appear. Some, maybe even all of the tracks posted below may not fit everyone’s definition of winter music. Indeed some may not even sound particularly ‘cold’. This could be that some of the tracks are associated with winter time for me as that was the season in which I first discovered them, or was playing them the most, and therefore have that link.

Hidden Place – Bjork

Recurring – Bonobo

‘T’ Plays It Cool – Marvin Gaye

Solid Air – John Martyn

Geometrie – Hocus Pocus

What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1 – Blue Sky Revisit) – DJ Shadow

Welcome to the birth of Essentially Eclectic, a blog that hopes to bring beautiful music to those that want to hear it. I will hopefully be updating the page regularly with some of my ever-changing personal favourites songs/mixes, sometimes music I have created, sometimes the music of others, as well as related discussion. Hope you enjoy!
