Daedelus – ‘Tailor-made (feat. Milosh)’ (Single Review)

Daedelus – Tailor-made feat. Milosh.

Ninja Tune

A name synonymous with fans of the blurrier edges of electronica, Daedelus (known to his mum as Alfred Darlington) is somewhat of a musical chameleon, able to turn his hand to different production styles with ease. Such versatility has allowed the Californian to hop from label to label – almost a different one for each of his 12 studio albums to date – dropping prominent releases on Mush Records, Stones Throw, and most recently Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint.

Recent work with side project The Long Lost (alongside wife Laura) has seen a return to the legendary Ninja Tune, and Darlington has remained with the label for his own latest full-length, Bespoke, due for release April 4th.

‘Tailor-made’ is the album’s lead single, and one that suggests Darlington has reverted back to the more electronic productions of 2008’s Love to Make Music to, rather than continuing down the line of last year’s diverse and daring Righteous Fists of Harmony.

While its title may by a nod towards the producer’s penchant for Victorian-style clothing, ‘Tailor-made’ is a melancholic yet club-ready jam, Darlington cranking up the BPMs under a frantic mix of floating keys and hand-clap snares. Fellow beat-twiddler Milosh takes control of vocal duties, drifting above the four-to-the-floor beats with ease. Darlington has suggested that guest vocalists will play a big part on Bespoke, with Milosh finding himself in the company of neo-soul singer Bilal, as well as leftfield rapper and previous Daedelus collaborator Busdriver.

‘Tailor-made’ comes stamped with remix approval, with TOKiMONSTA, Sepalcure, and Floating Points all getting in on the act: the latter’s a beautiful take on the track, slowing things down and pushing Milosh’s sumptuous vocals to the fore for a spacious, summery reworking.

‘Tailor-made’ is out on Ninja Tune, available from 21st March.
